Introduction
Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted into the skin at certain points on the body. Acupuncture is one of most ancient and characteristic therapeutic techniques of Chinese medicine and among the oldest healing practices in the world. It is considered as a part of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM).
Theory
Acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy, or 'life force', flows through the body in channels called meridians. This life force is known as Qi (pronounced as chee). Fine sterilized needles inserted into strategic points along these meridians correct the balance of Qi, which, in turn regulates and integrates bodily function with mental and emotional states. Some scientists and acupuncturists believe that it may stimulate nerves and muscle tissue, and that may be responsible for any beneficial effects.
Common uses/benefits of acupuncture
There is no one health condition or set of conditions that acupuncture is meant to treat. It is used to treat a wide range of health conditions. Because of its safe, effective, and integrated approach, acupuncture can be used as a primary health system. It has been used to enhance health and well-being, prevent future illness, as well as to correct current problems. Acupuncture is also famous for its quick and permanent relief for musculo-skeletal problems, with its best known analgesic (pain-relieving) effect.
Is acupuncture safe ?
Acupuncture is one of the safest medical treatments on offer. There are very few or no side effects from acupuncture when practised by a fully qualified practitioner. Any minor side effects that do occur, such as dizziness or bruising around needle points are mild and self-correcting. Treatment from a properly trained and qualified practitioner is the best guarantee of safe and effective treatment.
